5 Tips for Coordinating Paint Colors Between Adjoining Rooms

You’re at the crossroad.

Everyone in your family wants the walls painted a different color. You don’t have to just pick one color for your home.

Take a look at these five tips that will help you start coordinating paint colors in your Calgary home.

1. Match Your Trim

If you want to paint your rooms completely different colors, a matching trim will keep the spaces feeling cohesive.

Things like trim, crown molding, and doorframes should all be painted or stained the same hue no matter what color you paint the walls. You can also use woodwork like hardwood floors to keep the rooms consistent.

This lets you use a lot of colors without overwhelming the space.

Just make sure the paint or stain you choose for the trim compliments the wall. You may not think the wrong shade of white will make much of a difference, but it can. A shade of white that looks great with blue may not look the same when paired with yellow.

Don’t assume any white will look good with all your colors.

2. Stick with a Few Main Colors

Open floor plans connect different rooms together to make the space look large and open. This might mean your kitchen, dining room, living room, etc are all joined together.

But just because your home has an open floor plan doesn’t mean you have to paint everything the same color.

Instead, pick a few complimenting colors (stick with about two or three) and use them in varying amounts in each room. The rooms may be painted different colors, but they’ll all have the same three colors dispersed inside.

This will give them their own personalities and allow them to flow together.

3. Use Accent Colors

Say you painted the walls of your room blue, and you want your master bathroom to tie in with your bedroom.

This is where accent colors come in handy.

You don’t have to paint the walls of your bathroom the same color. Use the same blue from your bedroom as an accent tile or cabinet color. You can also add blue towels, shower curtain, shower mat, etc. to complete the look.

Accents can bring dashes of color into your rooms and link different spaces together.

4. Lay Out Some Rugs

You can paint two conjoining rooms contrasting colors, but to make them flow together, you’ll need to work a bit harder to connect the two.

A rug is usually a good choice.

Find a rug that has both the contrasting colors and lay it between the two rooms. This will make the rooms cohesive and the switch easier on the eyes.

And it’s okay if you can’t find a rug that matches both colors exactly. Colors that are slightly darker or lighter will look like a match.

5. Don’t Commit to Trends

Trendy colors, though they may look good for a time, will fade from popularity. Think of things like bold reds, organic greens, millennial pink, etc.

If you want to use these colors, use them as accents or accessories that are easy and inexpensive to replace.
